The Umbrella That Refused

The umbrella refused to open.

The raindrops were courteous on its surface,

then danced elsewhere.

People stared,

some annoyed,

some enchanted.

I carried it anyway,

as in possession of a little uprising.

in my lap,

like walking with a thought

that had legs of its own.

It didn’t shelter me,

but it made me look.

It made me believe

a little in nonsense.
